If you’re taking acne medication that makes your skin more sensitive, such as retinol products, you need to stop taking these medications before and after your chemical peel to reduce risk of side effects.  

What happens during chemical peels?

Sheila customizes your chemical peel and reviews the specifics before starting treatment. While you relax on the medical spa table, Sheila cleans your skin and applies a solution that removes surface oils, allowing the peel to penetrate into the skin.

The aesthetician covers any sensitive areas of your skin with petroleum jelly. Sheila may use one or more acids to treat your skin, such as:

• Glycolic acid made from sugar cane for light peels 
• Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) to brighten your skin
• Salicylic acid from wintergreen to treat acne
• Lactic acid from milk 
• Jessner’s peel (a combination peel)

Sheila applies the acid in one to three layers, depending on the depth of the pee.l The acid creates a controlled wound, exfoliating the top layer of skin while stimulating the regeneration of skin cells underneath.

Sheila keeps the peel on your skin for a few minutes and then removes or neutralizes it. You may feel a tingling, burning, or hot sensation during your chemical peel.
